Circulatory System

Respiratory System

Organ systems are taught one at a time, but no system works alone. Exam questions almost always ask you to connect two of them.

Getting oxygen to a muscle

  1. The respiratory system pulls air into the lungs, where oxygen crosses into the blood.
  2. The circulatory system carries that oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the muscle.
  3. The muscular system uses the oxygen to release energy and contract.
  4. Carbon dioxide, the waste product, rides the blood back to the lungs and is breathed out.

Four systems, one simple action. That interdependence is the real lesson of anatomy.

Two speeds of control

The nervous system sends electrical signals and acts in milliseconds — pulling your hand from something hot. The endocrine system sends hormones through the blood and acts over minutes to years — growth, sleep cycles, puberty. Fast and slow, working in parallel.

Homeostasis is the body holding its internal conditions steady while the outside world changes. It is the single idea that ties every system together.

Temperature control

Too hot: blood vessels near the skin widen and sweat glands release water, moving heat out. Too cold: those vessels narrow to keep heat in the core, and shivering muscles generate warmth.

Both responses are triggered automatically, without a conscious decision, and both aim for roughly 37°C.

The pattern to remember Homeostasis works by negative feedback: a sensor detects a change, the body responds in the opposite direction, and the response shuts off once balance returns.
